How to choose
- The job: Grammarly for proofreading and tone wherever you type, QuillBot for rewording text you already have, Jasper for a team writing in one brand voice (Pro is one seat; more need its sales-priced Business plan), Copy.ai for a small sales and marketing team sharing one AI workspace (though it has shipped no product update since June 2025), Writesonic for tracking how AI search answers mention your brand, Koala AI or Article Forge for SEO articles written from a keyword in volume, ProWritingAid for self-editing a novel or long manuscript with 25+ style reports and AI chapter critiques (whole-book analyses cost extra, from $17.50 to $50 a Story Credit), Sudowrite for drafting, expanding and rewriting fiction scenes in your own voice from a Story Bible, Rytr for short copy such as emails, captions and ads on a small budget (in Amrytt's test, before the relaunch, Sanchita Gidh found its 1,200-word post repeated itself and needed substantial rewriting), and Wordtune for rephrasing your own English sentences one at a time (Ctech reported that AI21 stopped developing it in April 2025).
- Words a month: Koala AI and Article Forge are the only two that state a word allowance, so the AI cost calculator prices them for your number of words. For 50,000 words a month, Koala AI Professional costs $49 for 100,000 and Article Forge $57 for 250,000; Koala AI counts words on GPT-6 Luna, and its premium models use them two or three times as fast. Rytr counts characters, not words, and its paid plans have no stated limit, Wordtune counts rewrites a day, and Sudowrite counts credits that its help center says do not map to words, so the calculator prices none of the three.
- Yearly or monthly: billed yearly, ProWritingAid Premium is $10 a month (about 67% less than $30), Grammarly Pro $12 (60% less), QuillBot Premium $8.33 (about 58% less), Article Forge's 25,000-word plan $13 (about 52% less), Wordtune Advanced $6.99 (about 50% less than $13.99) and Sudowrite Hobby & Student $10 (about 47% less than $19), while Writesonic saves about 20% ($79), Koala AI 20% ($20), Copy.ai and Rytr about 17% ($24 and $7.50) and Jasper about 14% ($59 against $69).
- Free plans: Grammarly's free plan includes 100 AI prompts a month, QuillBot's paraphrases 125 words at a time, ProWritingAid's checks 500 words at a time with 10 Rephrases and 3 Sparks a day, Rytr's writes 10,000 characters a month and Wordtune's gives 10 rewrites a day and 3 summaries a month; Koala AI's trial gives 5,000 words with no card, Article Forge's 5-day trial allows 10,000 words but needs a card and bills unless you cancel, Jasper and Writesonic offer 7-day trials (Jasper's bills automatically unless you cancel; Writesonic's needs no card), Copy.ai retired its free plan, and Sudowrite has no free plan, only a trial that needs no card and gives a number of credits it does not state.
- Refunds: Copy.ai within 5 calendar days of the first purchase, Writesonic within 7 days, Koala AI within 15 days if you used under 15,000 words and 100 credits, ProWritingAid only for yearly and lifetime plans within 3 days and never for monthly plans, QuillBot only where the law requires, Rytr only at its own discretion, and none from Jasper, Grammarly or Wordtune; Article Forge's pricing page promises 30 days if you made fewer than ten articles, but its terms say payments are non-refundable, and Sudowrite's help center promises a refund within 7 days while its terms say fees are not refunded.
