QuillBot review: pricing, features and what testers found

QuillBot is an AI writing assistant built around a paraphraser, with a grammar checker, summarizer, AI detector, humanizer, plagiarism checker and citation generator on the web, in browser extensions, Word and mobile apps. Paid plans start at $19.95 a month, or $8.33 a month billed yearly.

Our take

QuillBot is a low-cost tool for rewording text you already have: Memeburn rated its paraphrasing 4.5 out of 5 for control over how text is rewritten, and Cybernews found its summarizer cut a 1,700-word article to 100 words that kept the main ideas. Check its rewrites of technical text, which Memeburn found read well but lost precision, and do not lean on its AI detector, which scored lightly human-edited AI text as 0% AI in a Cybernews test. Premium costs $19.95 a month, or $8.33 a month billed yearly, and refunds are given only where the law requires them.

Based on QuillBot's published plans and the hands-on tests linked below, not on a test of our own.

Good for

  • Students and researchers who paraphrase, summarize and cite sources every week
  • Tightening existing emails, reports and essays rather than writing from a blank page

Watch out for

  • The free plan is for personal, non-commercial use only; Premium covers personal or internal business use, while Team Plan terms also allow external business use.
  • No refunds unless the law requires them (EEA and UK buyers can withdraw within 14 days); cancelling only stops the next renewal.
  • Free paraphrasing stops at 125 words at a time (some loads of QuillBot's pricing page say 100), and Premium plagiarism checks are capped at 25,000 words a month.
  • QuillBot says user data, including feature usage and quality signals, helps train its models; Team Plan content is used only to run and personalize the service, for security and quality control, and to comply with the law.

What hands-on testers found

We have not tested QuillBot ourselves. These are the published tests we found that used it hands-on, newest first; follow the links for the full reviews.

Memeburn · Josephine Abiodun · August 19, 2026

What they tested: An awkward sentence in Standard and Fluency modes, longer and technical passages, the grammar checker, summaries, citations for four academic sources and plagiarism scans.

  • Standard mode tightened sentences and kept most of the meaning; Fluency read more naturally but changed more wording.
  • Technical passages, such as one on financial derivatives, came back polished but less precise.
  • Citations were right for three of four sources; the fourth needed a date fix.

Their score: 4.1/5

Cybernews · Nijolė Simaitienė · updated April 16, 2026

What they tested: AI-written text, AI text lightly edited by a human, and human writing run through 12 AI detectors.

  • QuillBot's detector handled fully AI-written text well, for about 80% accuracy overall.
  • It found no AI at all in AI text a human had lightly edited.
  • It marked the human-written text as human, though scores for the same text shifted slightly between runs.

Their score: 80% accuracy; ranked first of 12 AI detectors

Cybernews · Mirza Silajdzic · updated May 28, 2025

What they tested: Months of everyday copywriting with the paraphraser, grammar checker, summarizer, plagiarism checker, citation generator, Flow editor and Chrome extension.

  • The modes and synonym slider helped rework flat AI drafts, but the output did not always pass AI detectors, even in Creative mode.
  • A 1,700-word article became a 100-word summary that captured the main ideas.
  • Paraphrasing from the extension's sidebar felt clunky because text had to be pasted in by hand.

Their score: 4.2 out of 5
