Grammarly review: pricing, features and what testers found

Grammarly is an AI writing assistant that checks grammar, spelling, clarity and tone wherever you type and writes or rewrites text from prompts; the company behind it renamed itself Superhuman in October 2025. Paid plans start at $30 a month, or $12 a month billed yearly.

Our take

Grammarly is a dependable everyday proofreader: Zapier picked it as the best all-round grammar checker, and Bryan Collins of Become a Writer Today found it reliably caught seeded spelling and grammar errors in a review updated in July 2026. Its AI detector is less proven: ZDNET's October 2025 test rated it 40% accurate, though Grammarly now says the detector ranks first on the RAID benchmark. Pro costs $30 billed monthly but $12 a month billed yearly, and Superhuman, the company behind it, sells a $15-a-month suite plan that also includes Grammarly.

Based on Grammarly's published plans and the hands-on tests linked below, not on a test of our own.

Good for

  • Students and professionals who want grammar and tone fixes in email, documents and chat
  • Small teams that need a shared style guide and brand tone, with up to 149 members on Pro

Watch out for

  • The $12 price is billed yearly ($144 up front); month to month, Pro costs $30, or $60 a quarter.
  • Superhuman's own Pro suite plan lists Grammarly paragraph rewrites, AI-text and plagiarism checks plus its Docs and Go apps for $15 billed monthly, half Grammarly Pro's monthly price, but its page gives no prompt count.
  • No refunds: the terms make payments non-refundable, with no credit for unused time, as far as the law allows.
  • Free, Premium and Pro accounts bought on Grammarly's website let it train its models on your writing by default; switch off Product Improvement and Training in your settings (on a team plan, only an admin can).

What hands-on testers found

We have not tested Grammarly ourselves. These are the published tests we found that used it hands-on, newest first; follow the links for the full reviews.

Become a Writer Today · Bryan Collins · updated July 17, 2026

What they tested: Daily use on emails, blog drafts and book chapters, plus a paragraph seeded with eight kinds of errors run through Grammarly.

  • It reliably caught the mechanical errors, including homophones, it's, effect and affect, then and than, and 'should of'.
  • It went further than the site's own free checker with one-click full rewrites and a tone read.
  • Neither checker caught every error on every run, and Grammarly sometimes over-edits creative or unusual phrasing.

ZDNET · David Gewirtz · October 29, 2025

What they tested: Five text blocks, two written by him and three by ChatGPT, run through Grammarly's AI detector and 10 other detectors.

  • Grammarly's AI detector got 40% right, with no improvement since his previous round of tests.
  • It rated a passage written entirely by ChatGPT as 0% AI-generated.
  • Its plagiarism check did correctly spot that the test text had been published before.

Their score: Accuracy 40%

Zapier · Kiera Abbamonte · updated June 3, 2025

What they tested: More than 30 grammar checkers narrowed to six, with the top picks run through spelling, grammar and conciseness scenarios; Grammarly by a long-time user.

  • Picked Grammarly as the best all-around grammar checker, covering all of the review's criteria.
  • Suggestions are sometimes off or totally wrong, though the good ones outnumber the bad.
  • The browser extension did not work well in WordPress, so the reviewer switched it off there.
