Before you pay
- Rytr changed direction in October 2026: its home page now sells an AI relationship manager and follow-up assistant, and the Unlimited and Premium plans are gone from the pricing page (it still listed them when toolist.ai read it on October 15). The published tests below cover the old writing app, and we found no published hands-on test of Engage.
- Engage works by reading your email, chat, calendar and meeting notes, and the extension's store listing says it handles personal communications, web history and website content. Rytr says nothing sends without your approval, and that you can disconnect a source and ask it to delete what it learned (its encrypted backups expire within 14 days).
- Features the old plans listed (tone-match counts, 50 or 100 plagiarism checks a month, larger character input limits and priority support) are not on the new pricing page, and we found no note from Rytr on what happened to them; ask before paying if you need them.
- The pricing page does not say what counts as an Engage action or a person research run, and Free's 3 research runs are not marked per month as the paid plans' are.
- No refunds: the terms and help center make subscriptions non-refundable and unprorated, with exceptions only at Rytr's discretion. The pricing FAQ says you can cancel anytime and keep access to the end of the billing period (from Settings > Plan in the help center; the terms say by emailing support@rytr.me), and yearly plans are billed annually.
- 'Unlimited characters' on Lite and above sits under a fair-usage policy Rytr does not quantify: the terms and help center allow restricting or banning accounts for bot-like use, automation, multiple accounts or fair-usage violations, and the terms forbid automated article spinning.
- The free plan counts every generated and processed character against its 10,000, and unused characters do not roll over.
- Rytr's own pages disagree: the yearly toggle says Save 20%, but Lite's $7.50 is about 17% off $9 (Personal and Pro save about 21% and 20%); the pricing page gives Free 30+ languages while a help article last updated in August 2025 still limits free users to one language, changeable once a month, and the home page says 38; older comparison pages still on rytr.me show the retired $29 plan, and a help article still prices team seats under the old plan names.
- Rytr does not say clearly which model writes for you: its older comparison pages say GPT-5 plus its own layer, a help article still says OpenAI's GPT-3, and Zapier's Harry Guinness was told GPT-4 when he asked the app; the relaunched pages name no model.
- You keep the rights to what you generate, but the terms give Rytr a licence to use, modify, display and distribute content you generate and post on the service, including making it available to other users.
- In 2024 the FTC barred Rytr from offering AI review and testimonial writing, alleging subscribers used it for fake reviews; the FTC set that order aside on December 22, 2025.
