ElevenLabs review: pricing, features and what testers found

ElevenLabs is an AI audio platform for lifelike text to speech, voice cloning, dubbing, sound effects and music, in a web studio and an API. Paid plans start at $6 a month for about 30 minutes of speech.

Our take

On October 6, 2026, ElevenLabs' Eleven v4 models held the top two places on Artificial Analysis's blind-vote speech leaderboard, and one tester found a professional voice clone hard to tell from the speaker. It is also cheap to start at $6 a month. One credit pool pays for speech, dubbing and music alike, so heavy dubbing drains it fast, and the free plan cannot be used commercially.

Good for

  • Narration, audiobooks and video voiceovers where a natural voice matters most
  • Cloning your own voice, and developers building voice apps

Watch out for

  • One credit pool covers every product; dubbing uses 2,000 to 10,000 credits a minute against about 1,000 for speech.
  • The free plan cannot be used commercially, even with credit.
  • Refunds only within 14 days and only if no credits were used.
  • Unused paid credits roll over for up to two months and are lost when you cancel.

What they tested: The same text run through every voice generator over three weeks, judged by a former actor on pacing and emotion.

  • Voices are life-like and the library covers many languages.
  • Audio tags such as whispering or sarcasm work but need prompt tweaking.
  • Output was occasionally inconsistent, especially sound effects.

What they tested: A team's ongoing voiceovers for YouTube and Reels, with a professional voice clone trained on about two hours of audio.

  • The clone sounded almost identical to the speaker; people they shared it with did not identify it as AI.
  • A few words still needed small pronunciation fixes.
  • Editing options are basic, and costs rise at high volume.
