Veo review: pricing, features and what testers found
Veo is Google DeepMind's text-to-video model family; Veo 3.1 makes short clips with native audio in Google Flow, the Gemini API and Google Cloud. Google AI plans with Flow credits start at $4.99 a month.
Our take
Veo 3.1 is the dependable all-rounder: Zapier picked it as the best all-around generator and Tom's Guide found it followed layered sound instructions better than Sora 2. Through a Google AI Pro plan, Veo 3.1 Fast works out to about 5 cents a second for 8-second clips by our calculation, and the API charges per second. Decrypt found its motion slower and less fluid than Kling's, and in the Gemini app Google is replacing Veo with its newer Gemini Omni model.
Based on Veo's published plans and the hands-on tests linked below, not on a test of our own.
Good for
- Dialogue and sound-heavy clips where audio must follow the script
- Developers who want per-second API pricing with cheap Fast and Lite tiers
Watch out for
- In the Gemini app, Google says Gemini Omni Flash will replace Veo; Veo 3.1 stays in Flow and the APIs.
- There is no free API tier, and Flow credits do not roll over.
- Flow requires age 18 and a supported region.
- Veo 3.1 at full quality costs 100 Flow credits for an 8-second clip, five times Veo 3.1 Fast.
What Veo does
- Veo 3.1 text-to-video with native dialogue, effects and ambience
- First-and-last-frame video, reference images and clip extension in Flow
- Three API tiers: Standard, Fast and Lite
- 4, 6 or 8 second clips in Flow
- An invisible SynthID watermark on all outputs
Price
Free plan: No free API tier. Google Flow gives 50 credits a day, but Google's own help pages disagree on whether you need a paid plan to generate video.
