Speechify review: pricing, features and what testers found

Speechify reads documents, web pages and books aloud in AI voices on phone, browser and desktop, and sells Speechify Studio for voiceovers and dubbing and a developer API as separate subscriptions. The reader is free with 10 robotic-sounding voices or $29 a month ($139 a year) for Premium, and Studio's paid plans start at $100 a year.

Our take

Speechify suits people who want documents, web pages and books read aloud on every device: the reader is free with 10 robotic-sounding voices, and Premium costs $29 a month or $139 a year, for personal use only. Against ElevenLabs and Murf the comparable product is Speechify Studio, a separate subscription whose pricing page shows only yearly plans: Studio Starter is $100 a year for 24 hours of voiceover with commercial rights. In Zapier's roundup, updated in September 2026, Miguel Rebelo picked Studio for the most human-like cadence, though tone varied by voice, and on October 13, 2026 Speechify's API model Simba 3.2 ranked 9th of 96 on Artificial Analysis's blind-vote leaderboard, behind ElevenLabs' two Eleven v4 models and ahead of Murf's Falcon 2 (22nd). Memeburn's Archana Shivkumar found the free reader voice stumbling over technical terms. The main catch is billing: free trials turn into paid plans unless cancelled, monthly plans are non-refundable, and yearly ones are refunded only within 7 days and with almost no use.

Based on Speechify's published plans and the hands-on tests linked below, not on a test of our own.

Good for

  • Students and people with dyslexia or ADHD who want documents, web pages and books read aloud on phone, browser and desktop
  • Creators who want commercial voiceovers on a yearly budget: Studio Starter is $100 a year for 24 hours of voiceover
  • Developers who want a text-to-speech API priced per character, with 500,000 free characters a month

Watch out for

  • The reader, Studio and the API are three separate subscriptions: Premium does not include Studio, and a reader subscription includes no API use.
  • Studio's pricing page shows only yearly prices ($100 and $300 a year); Speechify's help says Studio also has monthly plans but the page does not show their price, and Memeburn's tester was offered only the $139 yearly Premium plan, not the $29 monthly one.
  • Free trials (three days, the terms say, unless sign-up states another length) turn into a paid plan at the current price unless you cancel at least 24 hours before they end, and the 7-day refund window counts the trial days.
  • Refunds are narrow: monthly, quarterly and discounted plans are non-refundable, and a yearly plan only within 7 days if you used at most 500 HD words (reader) or 2 minutes (Studio); Studio top-ups are final, and Speechify itself refunds nothing bought through Apple or Google, which leaves only the store's own refund process.
  • The reader, free or Premium, is licensed for personal, non-commercial use only, and using it to make audio for resale or public distribution can get an account suspended; commercial rights come with paid Studio plans (not Studio's free plan) and the API.
  • Premium voice use is capped: at least 150,000 words a month guaranteed, raised to 1,000,000 a month through the end of 2026, after which only the baseline is promised.
  • Prices differ in the apps: the US App Store lists Premium at $139.99 and $159.99 and Premium Monthly at $11.99 and $24.99, and TechRadar's tester gives Premium as $175 a year.
  • The terms give Speechify a perpetual, irrevocable, royalty-free licence to material you submit, including for commercial and promotional use, and the privacy policy says staff may view your content to improve its algorithms.

What hands-on testers found

We have not tested Speechify ourselves. These are the published tests we found that used it hands-on, newest first; follow the links for the full reviews.

TechRadar · Paul Hatton · September 20, 2026

What they tested: The reader app in everyday use: its voice-matching quiz, listening to files, links and pasted text, the AI assistant, and reading text from photos.

  • Reading text out of photos impressed him most: it handled technical details even from lower-quality, poorly lit pictures.
  • The quiz narrowed 200+ voices to a good match, though accents were limited to British, American and Australian.
  • It let him listen while doing chores instead of setting time aside to read; he gives Premium as $175 a year, with a 3-day free trial.

Zapier · Miguel Rebelo · updated September 8, 2026

What they tested: Speechify Studio among the AI voice generators he ran the same text through over three weeks, judging pacing, intonation and emotion from his ten years as an actor; picked for human-like cadence.

  • Studio led on cadence: one take came out calm and well paced, like an experienced voice actor.
  • Speed, pitch, volume, pronunciation and pauses can be set, with emotion tags and several voices in one project.
  • Emotion and tone vary with the voice chosen, and the reader app's celebrity voices are not available in Studio.

Memeburn · Archana Shivkumar · August 29, 2026

What they tested: The reader app on a free account: a technical document read at 1x, browser extensions and cross-device sync, sign-up and the trial offer, and a listening session with a teenager who has autism and ADHD.

  • The free voice misread terms such as impedance, Fourier and kilohertz, skipped an acronyms table and mishandled symbols such as the ohm sign, though decimals and model names came out right.
  • Sync worked: listening resumed mid-sentence on another device.
  • Sign-up took 21 minutes, screenshots included; a 15-minute countdown suggested the trial would be lost without card details, yet the 7-day trial was still offered a day later.
  • The account was offered only the $139 yearly plan; the review finds it suits people with visual impairments, or with dyslexia or ADHD alone rather than alongside other conditions, and falls short on STEM-heavy text.
