Powtoon review: pricing, features and what testers found

Powtoon makes animated explainer, training and marketing videos in a slide-based browser editor with templates and cartoon characters, and its Anything to Video AI turns a prompt or document into an editable draft, with avatars, voiceover and Veo clips paid for in AI credits. Lite costs $49 a month, or $15 a month billed yearly, for 5 watermark-free exports a month.

Our take

Powtoon suits non-designers who want animated explainer, training and internal-communication videos built like a slide deck, from templates, cartoon characters and stock footage, with AI for drafts, avatars and voiceover paid for in credits. Lite costs $49 a month, or $15 a month billed yearly, but removes the watermark from only 5 exports a month and leaves out the premium templates; Professional ($99 a month, or $40 billed yearly) is the first plan with all templates and unlimited exports. AI credits are thin, above all on yearly billing: Lite gets 150 credits a month billed monthly but 300 for the whole year billed yearly, and an AI avatar costs 20 credits a minute. Zapier's Kiera Abbamonte, in a tested roundup of presentation software updated in May 2026, found the deck-style editor turns slides into a polished, explainer-like video with automatic slide timing, but called the free plan limited and monthly billing expensive. We found no independent hands-on test of Powtoon's AI features (Anything to Video, avatars, generated clips), so those are described from Powtoon's own pages. The 14-day refund is lost once you export or publish, make a video over 3 minutes or use 5 AI generations.

Based on Powtoon's published plans and the hands-on tests linked below, not on a test of our own.

Good for

  • HR, L&D, marketing and internal-communication staff without design skills making animated explainers and training videos from templates
  • Turning a slide deck or a short document (up to 10 pages) into a narrated draft video to finish in the editor
  • Students and teachers, on the $8-a-month yearly Education plan if a 'Powtoon for EDU' watermark on every export is acceptable

Watch out for

  • Yearly billing comes with far fewer AI credits: Lite gets 300 credits for the whole year billed yearly against 150 a month billed monthly (1,800 over 12 months), Professional 500 a year against 350 a month, Advanced 1,200 a year against 800 a month. At 20 credits a minute, Lite's yearly credits cover about 15 minutes of avatar video a year. Extra packs cost $49 for 125 credits, $99 for 300 or $149 for 450 (33 to 39 cents a credit), are non-refundable, and all credits expire when the subscription ends.
  • Monthly billing costs more than three times the yearly rate on Lite ($49 against $15 a month), which Zapier's tester named as a drawback; Professional's yearly $40 is shown as 43% off a crossed-out $70.
  • Lite removes the watermark from only 5 exports a month and leaves out premium templates, animations and stock media; Professional is the first plan with all of them and unlimited exports.
  • The 14-day money-back guarantee does not apply once you export or publish a video, create one longer than 3 minutes or use 5 or more AI generations, by the help center (the terms, revised January 2025, say more than five AI uses). Plans renew automatically and Powtoon sends no reminder before the charge.
  • The free plan cannot unlist videos, so published free videos are indexed by search engines. Powtoon's terms say a paid account's videos become viewable at a public link once the subscription ends, and that uploads beyond the free plan's 100 MB may be deleted after 14 days.
  • The pricing page does not say what an Anything to Video draft costs in credits, only that it varies with type and style by about 30 credits; AI dubbing works on MP4 videos, not on Powtoon projects.
  • Each paid license is for one named user; the terms forbid sharing a login and allow immediate termination for it.
  • Trustpilot's score is middling (3.7 out of 5 from 1,677 reviews); recent one-star reviews describe refused refunds and a charge after cancelling, and a two-star review from July 2026 says AI credits are hard to track and not returned when a generation fails.

What hands-on testers found

We have not tested Powtoon ourselves. These are the published tests we found that used it hands-on, newest first; follow the links for the full reviews.

Zapier · Kiera Abbamonte · updated May 20, 2026

What they tested: Powtoon as one of nearly 30 apps in a tested roundup of presentation software, picked for video presentations: building and editing a deck, browsing templates, changing design settings and trying the sharing options. The plan used is not named, and the review does not cover Powtoon's AI video features (Anything to Video, avatars, generated clips). The article was first published in 2014; this is its May 2026 update. Its link to Powtoon carries no affiliate tracking.

  • Editing a Powtoon works like editing a slide deck, and pressing play runs the deck as a video that comes close to an animated explainer.
  • Powtoon sets each slide's length from what is on it and shows how much of the total running time each slide takes.
  • A video can be laid out horizontal, vertical or square and published straight to YouTube, Wistia, Facebook Ads and other places.
  • Her drawbacks: the free plan is limited, and paying monthly ($49 for Lite against $15 a month billed yearly) puts Powtoon nearer video platforms such as Vimeo and Wistia than the other presentation apps.
