GitHub Copilot review: pricing, features and what testers found

GitHub Copilot is GitHub's AI coding assistant: code completions, chat and agents in your editor, a cloud agent that turns issues into pull requests, code review and a command-line tool. Paid plans start at $10 a month.

Our take

GitHub Copilot is the cheap, low-friction pick if your code already lives on GitHub: Pro costs $10 a month, and Zapier's Miguel Rebelo rated its GitHub integration ahead of Cursor's, though he found Cursor's agents still lead. Visual Studio Magazine's David Ramel watched the Copilot app turn an issue into a pull request, but the first version only looked finished and needed browser checks and more prompting. Since June 1, 2026, chat, agents and code review draw on a monthly allowance of AI credits priced by model and tokens, so heavy agent use can cost more than the plan price.

Based on GitHub Copilot's published plans and the hands-on tests linked below, not on a test of our own.

Good for

  • Developers who want AI help in the editor they already use, at a low monthly price
  • Teams on GitHub who want to hand issues to an agent and review the result as a pull request

Watch out for

  • Chat, agents, code review and the CLI use AI credits (1 credit = $0.01) priced by model and tokens, so a long agent session on a top model uses far more than a quick question; past your allowance, extra usage is billed at $0.01 a credit up to a budget you set, and code reviews also use GitHub Actions minutes.
  • Part of each paid individual plan's allowance (Pro, Pro+ and Max) is a flex allotment that GitHub says may change over time (500 of Pro's 1,500 credits), and unused credits expire at the start of each month.
  • On Free, Pro, Pro+ and Max, GitHub may use your prompts, outputs and code snippets to train AI models unless you opt out in settings; Business and Enterprise data is not used for training.
  • Cancelling a monthly plan keeps access to the end of the billing cycle, with no proration.

What hands-on testers found

We have not tested GitHub Copilot ourselves. These are the published tests we found that used it hands-on, newest first; follow the links for the full reviews.

Zapier · Miguel Rebelo · updated June 8, 2026

What they tested: Copilot against Cursor on editor support, codebase context, multi-file editing, agents, GitHub integration and price, as part of a round of testing AI coding tools.

  • Copilot installs as a plugin in most popular editors, while Cursor means switching to its own editor.
  • Copilot's GitHub integration is native and smoother, but its multi-file editing is less mature than Cursor's.
  • Cursor's agents still lead, though by a smaller margin than before.

Visual Studio Magazine · David Ramel · June 3, 2026

What they tested: The GitHub Copilot desktop app (technical preview) working a small GitHub issue, adding an About page to a Blazor app, through to a pull request.

  • The app read the issue, explored the repo, planned the change, built the project and opened a linked pull request.
  • The first pull request built cleanly but did not work in the browser; it took more prompting and a fix to a third file.
  • Separate tabs for the plan, changes, pull request and terminal made the agent's work easier to follow than one long chat.
