Synthesia review: pricing, features and what testers found
Synthesia turns a script, document, slide deck or prompt into a presenter video spoken by a stock or personal AI avatar, aimed at business training and internal communications. Paid plans start at $19 a month in the US.
Our take
Synthesia is built for corporate training and internal video, with interactive branching, many languages and enterprise compliance. Unite.AI found its voice cloning convincing but renders slow (7 to 14 minutes even for short videos), and AI b-roll needed cleanup. Nothing is refundable and stock avatars may not appear in paid ads, so try the free plan first. Plans changed on October 1, 2026, so older reviews quote old allowances.
Based on Synthesia's published plans and the hands-on tests linked below, not on a test of our own.
Good for
- Training, onboarding and internal communications at scale
- Teams localizing the same video into many languages
Watch out for
- Purchases are non-refundable, including a renewal you forgot to cancel.
- Stock avatars may not be used in any paid advertising.
- Credits reset each billing period and do not roll over; dubbing costs 80 credits a minute with lip-sync and 40 without by Synthesia's FAQ, though the plan calculator on its pricing page counts 76 credits a minute.
- Prices depend on your country: US visitors see Starter at $19 ($14 billed yearly) and Pro at $89 ($59 billed yearly), while the standard price card on the same page, shown in some other countries, has Starter at $29 ($18 billed yearly) and Pro at $64 billed yearly.
- The free plan has a watermark and no download.
- Plans changed on October 1, 2026 (Creator became Pro), so reviews before that quote old allowances.
What Synthesia does
- Stock AI avatars (125+ on Starter, 180+ on Pro) and personal avatars made from a photo
- An AI assistant that turns a prompt or a file such as a PDF into a draft video; PowerPoint import
- Dubbing and translation with voice cloning and lip-sync
- Interactive videos with clickable buttons and branching on Pro and up; quizzes on Enterprise
- 1080p MP4 export on paid plans, embeds, and an API on Pro and Enterprise
Price
Free plan: 10 minutes of video a month plus 500 credits, 9 stock avatars, watermarked, shared by link only with no download.
| Plan | Billed monthly | Billed yearly, per month | Includes | Price per minute of avatar video |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Starter | $19 | $14 | 1,250 credits a month on top of the 10 minutes and 500 credits every plan gets (1,750 credits in all). Synthesia's credits help article counts the 1,750 credits as about 17 minutes of video on top of the 10, so about 27 a month; its pricing page says about 22, because it leaves out the 500 free credits. Downloads, 125+ avatars, 3 personal avatars | $0.704 |
| Pro | $89 | $59 | 6,000 credits a month on top of the 10 minutes and 500 credits every plan gets (6,500 credits in all), about 75 minutes of video at Synthesia's rate of about 100 credits a minute; its pricing page says up to about 60 minutes on top of the free allowance, leaving out the 500 free credits. 180+ avatars, 5 personal avatars, interactive videos; bigger credit tiers up to 48,000 credits for $676 a month ($448 billed yearly) | $1.19 |
| Enterprise | not listed | not listed | Custom pricing: unlimited video minutes, 240+ avatars, SSO and SCORM export | – |
Price per minute of avatar video is our calculation: the monthly-billing price divided by what the plan includes, assuming you use all of it. It is not a measured cost.

What hands-on testers found
We have not tested Synthesia ourselves. These are the published tests we found that used it hands-on, newest first; follow the links for the full reviews.
Unite.AI · Janine Heinrichs · October 1, 2026
What they tested: Five videos on the paid Starter plan: a training video from a PDF, a stock-avatar video, a personal avatar with a cloned voice, a Spanish dub and a customized avatar.
- Each render needed 7 to 14 minutes, including videos shorter than a minute.
- Runtimes missed the request: 56 seconds when 90 were asked for.
- Her cloned voice was the strongest part; her personal avatar did not pass as her.
- A short Spanish dub used 287 of the 800 monthly credits Starter had before the October 2026 plan changes.
Zapier · Miguel Rebelo · updated July 8, 2026
What they tested: Avatar, voice and script, then one-click translation, in a tested roundup; picked for high-quality avatars.
- The interface centres on the script-to-avatar workflow and is simple.
- Translating from English to French took one click.
- Full-screen viewing shows some unnatural movement.
Cybernews · Mirza Silajdzic · updated October 31, 2025
What they tested: A video on the free plan using built-in backgrounds, stock footage and avatars.
- A 1 minute 25 second video took about 10 minutes to generate.
- The preview does not animate the avatar, so you see the result only after generating.
- Some gestures looked unnatural.
