Leonardo.Ai review: pricing, features and what testers found

Leonardo.Ai is a web and mobile app for making and editing AI images and video with its own Lucid and Phoenix models and third-party models such as Nano Banana, GPT-Image-1 and Veo, all paid for in tokens. Paid plans start at $12 a month, or $10 a month billed yearly.

Our take

Leonardo.Ai suits creators who want many image and video models, styles and editing tools in one app: Tom's Guide named it the best AI image generator for features, and in January 2025 TechRadar's Eric Hal Schwartz got strikingly realistic photos even on a free account. Its own models are not the quality leaders: on October 9, 2026, Lucid Origin Ultra ranked 96th of 168 on Artificial Analysis's blind-vote text-to-image board, and Freepik won a five-prompt Tom's Guide head-to-head in March 2025, before Lucid Origin came out. Plans start at $12 a month, but tokens do not buy a fixed number of images, and free-plan images are public.

Based on Leonardo.Ai's published plans and the hands-on tests linked below, not on a test of our own.

Good for

  • Creators who want many image and video models, styles and editing tools under one subscription
  • Heavy users on Premium or Ultimate who can wait in a slower queue once their tokens run out

Watch out for

  • Tokens are not a fixed number of images: the cost depends on the model, Fast or Ultra mode and image size. Nano Banana costs 40 tokens an image, so Essential's 8,500 tokens buy about 212 of those.
  • Free-plan images are public and Leonardo keeps broad rights to use them; generating privately needs a paid plan.
  • Unlimited relaxed generation starts only after all your tokens run out and covers only selected models; third-party models such as Nano Banana, GPT-Image-1, Veo and Sora always cost tokens.
  • No free trial on personal plans and no refund for a change of mind; rollover tokens are lost when you cancel, and top-up tokens work only while you subscribe.

What hands-on testers found

We have not tested Leonardo.Ai ourselves. These are the published tests we found that used it hands-on, newest first; follow the links for the full reviews.

Artificial Analysis Image Arena · October 9, 2026

What they tested: Blind preference votes between text-to-image models, read on the day we checked.

  • Lucid Origin Ultra ranked 96th of 168 models (Elo 913) and Lucid Origin Fast 102nd (Elo 901).
  • Phoenix 1.0 Ultra ranked 131st (Elo 843).
  • GPT Image 2.5 Sunburst led the board (Elo 1198).

Their score: Lucid Origin Ultra ranks 96 of 168

Tom's Guide · Ryan Morrison and Amanda Caswell · updated February 24, 2026

What they tested: A roundup of AI image generators run side by side with standard prompts for realism, text, composition and character consistency.

  • Picked as the best generator for features, with granular control over each image.
  • The Phoenix model's photorealistic results rival some of the best outputs available, they wrote.
  • The interface is complex.

Their score: Best for features

Tom's Guide · Nigel Powell · March 21, 2025

What they tested: Five prompts run on Leonardo and Freepik: typography, a photoreal scene, abstract design, a macro nature shot and a fantasy scene. An older version of Leonardo, before its Lucid Origin model came out.

  • Text in the image came out unclear, so he judged text not a strong point.
  • Two of Leonardo's picks were the best of at least eight tries and still only adequate.
  • Leonardo won the macro dewdrop prompt, but Freepik's Mystic 2.5 model won the test overall.

TechRadar · Eric Hal Schwartz · January 22, 2025

What they tested: Photo-style images on a free account with presets such as Cinematic Kino, plus the prompt helper and a prompt written from a photo of himself. An older version of Leonardo, before its Lucid Origin model came out.

  • Even the free account produced strikingly realistic photo-style images.
  • The improve-prompt button turned a short idea into a detailed prompt.
  • Its description of his uploaded photo was accurate in most details.
