Ideogram review: pricing, features and what testers found
Ideogram is an AI image generator known for accurate text in images, with its own Ideogram 4.5 model, partner models such as GPT Image and Nano Banana, a layered editor and an API. Paid plans start at $20 a month, or $15 a month billed yearly.
Our take
Ideogram is a strong pick when the words in an image have to be right: Zapier's Harry Guinness found its text accurate and reliable and its image quality up there with Midjourney's, and Banani's Vlad Solomakha scored its text rendering 4.5 out of 5. It is not the overall quality leader: on October 9, 2026, Ideogram 4.5 ranked 35th of 168 models on Artificial Analysis's blind-vote text-to-image board and 24th of 81 for editing. Plus costs $20 a month, but its credits go more than three times further at Low quality than at the default High, and Ideogram gives no refunds.
Based on Ideogram's published plans and the hands-on tests linked below, not on a test of our own.
Good for
- Posters, logos, social graphics and ads where the words in the image must be spelled right
- Heavy users on Plus or Pro who can wait in the slow queue once their credits run out
Watch out for
- The image count depends on the quality setting: Plus's 2,400 monthly credits are about 240 images on Ideogram 4.5 at its default High quality (10 credits each) or 800 at Low, and unused monthly credits do not roll over.
- No refunds for subscriptions, renewals or credit purchases, and you must cancel at least 5 days before the renewal date to avoid the next charge.
- Unlimited slow-queue generation after your credits run out covers Ideogram models only; edits, reference images, upscales, partner and custom models always cost credits.
- Commercial use is allowed on every plan, but free-plan images are public and the terms let other users reuse and remix public images.
What Ideogram does
- Ideogram 4.5, 4.0 and 3.0 models, with JSON prompts on 4.5 and 4.0 for exact text placement, layout and colors
- Partner models including GPT Image and Nano Banana in the same app
- Studio, a layered editor with AI edits and a tool that turns text in an image into editable text layers
- Up to 5 reference images on Ideogram 4.5 for edits and consistent characters
- Batch generation of up to 500 prompts from a spreadsheet on Pro, Team and Enterprise
- Upscaling up to 8 times, custom models, video, and an API and MCP server that spend the same credits
