HeyGen review: pricing, features and what testers found

HeyGen turns a script or prompt into a video of a stock avatar or your own digital twin speaking it, with lip-synced translation into 175+ languages. Paid plans start at $29 a month.

Our take

HeyGen suits marketing and social video: Unite.AI found its digital twin captured her look, voice and mannerisms, and a head-to-head test found its avatars more realistic than Colossyan's. Watch the credits, which buy fewer minutes on the newest avatar models, and expect long videos to render slowly at busy times. The free plan cannot be used commercially.

Based on HeyGen's published plans and the hands-on tests linked below, not on a test of our own.

Good for

  • Marketers and creators making short social, product and explainer videos
  • Localizing one video into several languages with lip-sync

Watch out for

  • Free-plan videos are for personal and non-commercial use only.
  • Minutes per credit depend on the avatar model: 600 Creator credits are about 19 minutes on Avatar IV but 12.5 on Avatar V.
  • Refunds are discretionary and only within 15 days.
  • Creator and Pro cannot buy one-off credit packs; only Business can top up.
  • Credits roll over for one extra month on monthly plans and are lost if you cancel.

What hands-on testers found

We have not tested HeyGen ourselves. These are the published tests we found that used it hands-on, newest first; follow the links for the full reviews.

Digital Karthik · Karthik M · August 23, 2026

What they tested: Head-to-head with Colossyan on avatars, voice, lip-sync, translation and training videos.

  • HeyGen's avatars looked more realistic than Colossyan's, with strong lip-sync.
  • Emotional delivery could still feel scripted.
  • It was faster for producing many language and platform variants.

Unite.AI · Janine Heinrichs · April 2, 2026

What they tested: A travel and food vlog from a prompt with the video agent, then a digital twin built from footage of herself.

  • The agent planned the video in seconds and finished it in a few minutes.
  • Lip-sync was realistic and scenes matched the prompt, though it still felt somewhat robotic.
  • Her digital twin captured her voice, look and mannerisms well.
  • Long videos and peak times rendered slowly.
