Hedra review: pricing, features and what testers found

Hedra turns a portrait and a voice track into a talking or singing character video with its own Character 3 and Hedra Avatar models, and runs other makers' image, video and voice models on the same credits. Paid plans start at $20 a month for 2,000 credits.

Our take

Hedra suits creators who want an expressive talking character from one portrait and a voice track, with other image and video models on the same credits; paid plans start at $20 a month for 2,000 credits. The catch when comparing it with HeyGen or Synthesia is that Hedra shows each model's credit cost only inside the app, so its public pages do not say how many minutes of avatar video a plan buys (its API lists Character 3 at 2.5 to 6.25 cents a second). In Curious Refuge's 2026 lip-sync test, Mable Huang found Hedra more expressive than HeyGen but its faces sometimes off, and picked HeyGen for live action. In older, 2025 tests on free accounts, Christy Tucker of Experiencing eLearning found Character 3's lip sync good enough for training-scenario dialogue, while Abdullah Ajibade of Techpoint Africa saw two of four avatar-image runs on Flux Kontext Pro, another maker's model, end in errors. Monthly credits do not roll over, no refund policy is published, and it scores 1.8 on Trustpilot from 67 reviews.

Watch out for

  • Hedra shows what each model costs in credits only in the app's live model selector, so its public pages do not tell you how many minutes of avatar video a plan buys.
  • Monthly plan credits do not roll over; credit packs never expire but need an active subscription to use, and once a cancelled plan runs out you keep only limited watermarked generations.
  • No refund policy is published: the terms and billing help cover cancelling (billing stops, and credits last to the end of the period) but not refunds, and Hedra says only that a failed request 'may be refunded automatically'.
  • The terms give Hedra a perpetual, irrevocable licence to use your uploads and outputs to run the service for you and other users; the privacy policy lets it train its AI models on de-identified data, and face and voice data may be kept up to three years after your last use.
  • Only monthly prices are published; Hedra's docs describe annual plans that pay out a year's credits up front and warn that plans, billing intervals, credit packs and prices can vary, but no annual or credit-pack price is shown.

What they tested: Image-plus-audio lip sync on avatar models: Hedra Avatar against HeyGen and Kling Avatar on a live-action character, and Hedra Character 3 among the models tried on an animated one.

  • HeyGen came out on top for live action; with avatar models in general, she found hand and body movement harder to control.
  • Hedra was more expressive, but its facial animation sometimes felt off.
  • On the animated character, Hedra Character 3 was a bit unpredictable, and Omnihuman 1.5 stood out.

What they tested: Three days on a free account with 300 credits: avatar images from one prompt on Flux Kontext Pro, a real-time avatar chat and speech generation; it reports no Character 3 video test.

  • Two of four runs of the same avatar-image prompt ended in errors, and the two results differed on a requested detail.
  • The real-time avatar felt lifelike with smooth lip sync, but could not answer a niche business question.
  • Speech generation was refused because, Hedra said, the free plan had been disabled because of demand.

What they tested: Hedra Character 3 on the free plan: one character from a Midjourney image and ElevenLabs audio, in a calm take and a frustrated one.

  • She rates Hedra as particularly good at syncing to audio, which fewer AI video tools do.
  • Hand gestures felt natural if a little too frequent, and reflections on glasses held up, though the videos still had flaws.
  • Free-plan generations were capped at 20 seconds each; she judged the clips good enough for dialogue in an interactive training scenario.
