Descript review: pricing, features and what testers found
Descript transcribes your recording so you can cut and rearrange video by editing the text, with AI tools for filler words, sound cleanup, clips and dubbing. Paid plans start at $24 a month.
Our take
Descript is built for talking-head video, podcasts and interviews: editing the transcript, removing filler words and cleaning up sound are fast and, in a tester's hands, mostly reliable. It is weaker for visually complex edits, and long projects can slow down. Watch the two monthly meters, media hours and AI credits, and the 48-hour refund window.
Based on Descript's published plans and the hands-on tests linked below, not on a test of our own.
Good for
- Podcasters, YouTubers and educators editing interviews and talking-head video
- Teams that want captions, short clips and dubbing in the same tool as the edit
Watch out for
- Two monthly meters: media hours (everything you import or record) and AI credits.
- The free plan's 100 AI credits are one-time, and free exports are watermarked at 720p.
- 4K export needs Creator or above.
- Plan refunds only within 48 hours of the invoice.
- A tester saw slowdowns on long multi-scene projects and occasional sync drift in the built-in recorder.
What Descript does
- Edit video by deleting or moving words in the transcript
- Underlord, an AI co-editor that applies edits from a prompt
- Studio Sound voice cleanup and noise removal
- Remove filler words and retakes, shorten gaps, fix eye contact, green screen
- Caption translation and AI dubbing, voice clones and remote recording

What they tested: Transcription apps over a month of use; Descript picked for transcription for video editing.
- Editing video by editing the transcript works as the core workflow for talking-head content.
- You can type a new sentence and generate matching voice to patch a missed line.
Style Factory · Matt Walsh · March 3, 2026
What they tested: Transcript editing, AI prompts, Studio Sound on office recordings, clip generation, translation, dubbing and voice cloning.
- Removing filler words and shortening silences across a whole recording took seconds.
- Studio Sound cut background noise from a busy office without distorting the voice.
- Translation and a lip-synced French version of the author's footage were convincing.
- Transcription needed fixes on names and technical terms, and long projects slowed down.
