Base44 review: pricing, features and what testers found

Base44 is an AI app builder, owned by Wix since 2025, that turns a chat description into a working web app with a built-in database, sign-in and hosting. Paid plans start at $20 a month for 100 message credits.

Our take

Base44 suits non-coders who want a working internal tool or prototype with the database, sign-in and hosting already built in, from $20 a month for 100 message credits. Two of the three testers had a first version within minutes, but none had a smooth run: AllAboutCookies' Martin Dubovic got a three-role scheduling app about 90-95% ready after more than 40 prompts, using 48.4 of the Builder plan's 250 credits; Cybernews' Nijolė Simaitienė never got a working sign-in page; and TechRadar's Christian Cawley sat through two stalled builds before his calculator worked, scoring it 4 out of 5 but pointing to more reliable rivals. Message credits are charged after each message by the work it took, are not refunded for AI mistakes and expire at each reset, a separate pool of integration credits keeps your published app's emails and AI features running, and outside Enterprise your workspace data can be used to train AI models.

Based on Base44's published plans and the hands-on tests linked below, not on a test of our own.

Good for

  • Non-coders building internal tools, dashboards and simple business apps that need logins and a database
  • Quick prototypes and MVPs to test an idea before paying for development
  • Small teams: every plan includes multi-user editing, and members draw on one shared credit pool

Watch out for

  • Message credits are worked out after each message by how much work it took, so you cannot see the price first; Base44's docs give rough examples from about 0.5 credit for a text change to 3 to 4 for an app-wide change, and its Credits page says automatic error fixes use credits on the Free plan but not on paid plans, though its AI chat guide says Resolve with AI does not use credits.
  • Unused credits expire when they reset each month (daily on Free), except for one extra cycle after an upgrade between monthly plans. Credits spent on AI mistakes are not refunded, fees are non-refundable unless the law requires otherwise, and cancelling refunds nothing for the current period.
  • Integration credits pay for your published app's built-in services, such as emails, AI calls and workflow steps; when they run out those actions fail, and your app's users see a generic error until the reset or an upgrade.
  • On every plan except Enterprise, including Business, Base44 can use your workspace data to train AI models, and there is no opt-out setting.
  • Exported code is not a clean exit: GitHub sync starts on Builder, and AllAboutCookies found the exported backend relies on Base44's SDK, so it needs development work to run elsewhere. App Store and Google Play apps wrap your published web app in a web view.

What hands-on testers found

We have not tested Base44 ourselves. These are the published tests we found that used it hands-on, newest first; follow the links for the full reviews.

TechRadar · Christian Cawley · July 1, 2026

What they tested: The crypto price calculator prompt TechRadar also used to test other no-code tools, then publishing the result.

  • His first two attempts stalled on a building screen, one for 3 hours, where rival tools finished within 5 minutes.
  • After he asked why it was not working, a third attempt and a 'fix with AI' step produced a working calculator, but with 9 currencies the prompt never asked for.
  • Publishing took one click and he rated the documentation and its AI help assistant highly, but found Lovable and Hostinger Horizons faster with the same prompt.

Their score: 4 out of 5

AllAboutCookies · Martin Dubovic · updated June 5, 2026

What they tested: A group exercise scheduling app with member, instructor and admin roles, built on the Builder plan from a 512-word requirements prompt; last tested January 12, 2026.

  • The first build took about 10 minutes and, after two small fixes and a second prompt, was about 80% ready.
  • With no end-to-end testing he checked each role by hand; after several hours and more than 40 prompts the app was about 90-95% ready, using 48.4 of the plan's 250 monthly credits.
  • He warns that the exported backend depends on Base44's SDK for database calls, so moving the app elsewhere takes development work.

Their score: 4.9 editorial rating

Cybernews · Nijolė Simaitienė · updated March 9, 2026

What they tested: A training journal app, a Candy Crush-style game and an Airbnb-style booking site, with the first two also tried in Lovable.

  • The training journal worked within 3 minutes, and the game's first version already had levels and goals, which Lovable's lacked.
  • Adding a feature to save favorite properties to an account worked without issues.
  • Asked for a separate sign-in page, it said it had deleted the whole project, restored it on request, then showed a blank screen; account creation never worked, even in a fresh project.
